Northern is an amazing place for our children to learn. In our latest news section we will share with you the latest events taking place across the school. More detailed information can be found on your child's class website page.
Today our Year 4 class have taken part in learning outside of the classroom. They visited the Gujarat Hindu Temple in Preston. We headed to the main hall and removed our shoes before being taken to the prayer room. We received a bindi then went straight to the shrine of Ganesh to learn about his legends according to Hindus. After learning about each deity in the prayer hall and marvelling at the beautiful creations on the ceiling, we learned two calming techniques thanks to our Guru! Namaste.
Today our Year 5 and Year 6 children have had a visit from Vinny and Lyndsay to share with us the Bright Sparx initiative. The children listened intently as the police talked all about staying safe round bonfires and fireworks. They learnt all about what to do and what not to do when near to them. The police were impressed about how sensible they were too which is always great to hear! Well done Year and Year 6!
Today we had an assembly with 2 very special guests! Councillors Andy Macnae and Jackie Oakes came into school to listen to our Northern family's plea to keep us safe from speeding drivers. The children told them all about what we had learnt and why we had written letters pleading for something to be done on the road outside school to keep us all safe. Our school council presented Jackie and Andy with the letters and then told the children they would do their best to help us and gave us 3 jobs to do. Job 1 - display our new banner from Lancashire Highways on the school railings; Job 2 - put a Slow Down Save Lives sticker on our bins at home and Job 3 - speak to our parents about slowing down past our school. Watch this space for some extra road safety features around school!
Today our Year 3 and 4 football team took part in a competition at The Valley. They played well. Some great saves were made by our super keeper Brody N. The team decided their man of the match was Noah who defended so well. They came 3rd and we could not be prouder. They represented Northern well and showed great sportsmanship. We also had some great supporters from our Northern family in Mason and Izzy, who stood on the side line, supporting them and giving them tips and guidance. Special thanks to those parents who helped with transport at such short notice! Well done Year 3 and 4!
Today Dena Payne and Adam Lancaster came in to speak to Year 6 about treating people fairly. The children took part in several activities and then Adam told them all about his sister Sophie - the lessons we all learnt is never judge anyone by how they look. They said Year 6 were a fantastic group of children who showed amazing maturity and made some fantastic observations! Well done Year 6!
Our Key Stage 2 children have been running our very own Snack Club which was a request from our children through School Council. We listened to the request and we put it in place with the help of Miss Collins and the Year 5 children. The Snack Club offers fruit pots every day and on a Thursday and Friday they can choose between a fruit pot and a cereal bar for only 20p! The money raised will go straight back into projects for the children. Thank you Miss Collins and thank you Year 5 helpers!
This week the children have been writing letters to Lancashire County Council about getting speed restrictions in place outside school. This is a joint initiative with Anna's Cafe Bar and the police. All classes have been learning about how to stay safe and just how dangerous the speeding cars are to the lives of our children! The children have all written very powerful letters and we now have our local and county councillors involved so watch this space! Here are a sample of just some of them!
Today our Year 2 children had a real-life author come to visit them!
Mike aka 'Sam Shepherd' the author came to read his book 'The Great Bone Robbery' about a dog who was a police officer. He told the children stories about his time as a Police Officer. He joined when he was 16 years old. Year 2 told us that their favourite story was about a group of silly criminals who stole shaving foam and sprayed it in a line on walls all the way back to their own house! After all his tips and advice, you need to watch this space for some amazing Year 2 story writers!
Today was a chance for parents and their children to come into school to enjoy a brew, a slice or three of cake and have a good old natter whilst at the same time raising money for Macmillan. The children had a Colin the Caterpillar hunt to complete and Leo from Year 1and then the adults got the chance to win prizes galore in our raffle! Many thanks to everyone who attended and to all those who donated cakes - we could not have done it without you. We managed to raise over £230!
Our Year 5 and 6 football team did an amazing job at their tournament yesterday. It was a nail-biting game which had to go to penalties, but we won that and got through to the final match! With Miss Collins cheering them on from the sideline, the team played an outstanding game but unfortunately didn't claim the title. However, Miss Collins and all the staff at Northern could not be prouder of them for the resilience and sportsmanship they all showed. Go team Northern!
