  • Chess Masterclass

    Thu 23 Feb 2017
This term we have started our Chess Masterclass. Mr Bridges, who has played Chess for over 30 years and is in a Chess League, spotted some children with a particular flair for the strategies needed to challenge opponents in matches. Every Thursday lunch, Mr Bridges sets up a chess board with the pieces in a particular position and teaches the children the best ways to beat their partner. The children thoroughly enjoyed the first session and it was good to see the challenges set.
  • Hearts and Voices

    Fri 10 Feb 2017
As part of our links this year with Chant Productions and following on from the singing event at the rugby final in Anfield during the Autumn Term, on Friday 10th February some of our Year 6 children enjoyed the amazing opportunity to sing as part of a choir at Blackburn Cathedral alongside the opera singer Sean Ruane. Many other schools from our area took part and had been learning and practicing the songs enthusiastically since January. The Hearts and Voices concert is an annual event that is organised to help raise money for the Rossendale Hospice and our school was invited this year to take part. As always the children who were able to attend did not let Northern down and behaved and performed to an excellent standard, despite having to wait around and take part in rehearsals after an already busy day at school. Many thanks to the parents and carers that were able to attend and support the children on the night, including particularly those who were kind enough to transport the children to and from the event, it was greatly appreciated. The event itself was fantastic and the children got to experience performing in a magnificent venue alongside the amazing scout band. The few audience members that i got to speak to all said what a fantastic evening it was and how well the children did. This was clear to see as while the children were performing I could see every member of the audience thoroughly enjoying their singing. Well done to Enfys, Emily, Mason, Kyle F, Zack, Chelsea, Esther, Briony, Lucy, Olivia, Connor, Leah, Rhys and Hannah!

  • Important message from Northern Primary School:

    Fri 10 Feb 2017

I would like to share with you a letter that has arrived in school from the Minister of State for School Standards, Nick Gibb.

I would like to congratulate you, your staff and your pupils for the very high standard that your pupils in your school have achieved in writing and in mathematics for the 2016 key stage 2 assessments.

Your school's results, as published on 15 December, show that 100 per cent of your pupils attained the expected standard in writing and mathematics at the end of key stage 2. This means that your school is in the top 1% of primary schools in England for attainment in writing and mathematics.

Thank you for your hard work and professionalism in producing such high standards and congratulations again to you and your staff for all you have achieved.

    With best wishes.

    Yours sincerely,

    Nick Gibb MP

  • Sign2Sing Week

    Wed 08 Feb 2017
This week the children of Northern have done us proud by doing one of the things they do best....helping and thinking of others! They have been very busy taking part in our Sign2Sing week which has involved lots of activities and fundraising. They have focused on finding out more about what it is like to be deaf and supporting the deaf health charity Signhealth by raising funds. Many of the children have been having a go at simple finger spelling and finding out how difficult it can be to lip read! Year 1 have learned how to sign the song 'I Can Sing A Rainbow' and higher up the school, children in Year 6 have followed the story of a 15 year old deaf boy growing up in Uganda and how life changes dramatically for him when he is finally given the opportunity to learn sign language.

Our biggest events were held on Wednesday where the children came to school in non-uniform for £1 and we had a cake sale, the proceeds of which will all go to the charity Sighhealth. The whole school also gathered in the hall to sing and sign the official sign2sing 2017 song 'Together', which they have been practicing in their singing assemblies during the last few weeks.

Many thanks to all those who provided cakes and donations for this very worthy cause. Hopefully I will be able to let you knw how much we raised very soon!

  • Chinese Dragon Dance

    Wed 25 Jan 2017
Today all of the children have had an amazing time learning about Chinese New Year and the celebrations around the Year of the Rooster. To help us to celebrate we have had a Dragon Dance workshop in school all day. Each class has had chance to learn and take part in different dances which are part of Chinese New Year celebrations. As the photos show, the children definitely had lots of fun!
  • BBC 500 word competition

    Mon 16 Jan 2017

On Monday 16th January, Years 4, 5 and 6 took part in a BBC live lesson to launch the BBC Radio 2's 500 words short story competition. It was hosted by Naga Munchetty and Benny Harwood. The special guest authors were Malorie Blackman and Frank Cottrell-Boyce. It was full of fantastic ideas and resources and every child thoroughly enjoyed the session and were left buzzing with wonderful ideas for their own 500 word story. As a result of this session, all of the children will be entering the competition - watch this space!

  • Babushka

    Mon 12 Dec 2016
All of the children enjoyed a special treat this morning when they watched the dress rehearsal of Babushka performed by our Year 1 and Year 2 children. I am certain that if the children perform in exactly the same way for parents there will be a hall full of very proud parents and grandparents. Well done to you all!
  • Valentine's Disco

    Sun 11 Dec 2016

Children in both key stages said how much they had enjoyed the disco in school. Well done to all members of the PTA and staff who made this such a successful evening.

  • Deerplay Remembrance Service

    Fri 11 Nov 2016
On Friday 11th November, pupils in years 4,5 and 6 shared in Bacup Rotary Club's annual Service of Remembrance at Deerplay War Memorial. As always they were a credit to school and their parents. This year was made even more special as it was broadcast by Radio Lancashire. Work written by the year 6 children was read out throughout the radio programme and then the Remembrance service was aired. If you would like to listen to the radio programme you can follow the link on the 'Useful links' tab of the website. The service was also streamed on the Radio Lancashire Facebook page. The comments from members of the public who listened to the radio programme or watched the live streaming of the service are testimony to how amazing the children at Northern are. During the Remembrance Service some of the Year 5 and Year 6 children used sign language to share the poem 'Flanders Fields' by John McCrae - a huge thank you to Miss Scott for teaching them this.
  • Signing Flanders Fields

    Thu 10 Nov 2016

We had a very special singing assembly today where the children learned Flanders Field sung by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae.
During this assembly, we were very lucky to learn the first chorus in sign language. Many thanks to Miss Stott who spent time teaching the children this wonderful skill and please take a look at this short clip.
