• Lite Nite Assembly

  Today Vision came in to Northern to tell the children all about Lite Nite which is an event for families and children to attend. The children learnt all about how we are all special and unique and they were entertained by Henry and the Amazing Reach Puppets singing 'This Little Light of Mine'. Flyers have gone home with the children inviting you to this free event.

  

• Northern's Pumpkin Competition

  Today we have had some fantastically decorated pumpkins brought into school. The classes all used their value of democracy to vote for their favourite in class. We had some fantastic themed pumpkins such as The Greatest Showman and Frozen as well as some beautifully hand-carved designs. The winners were announced and the children won a bag of treats! Well done to all the winners who are listed below:

• Playground Peace Police Interviews

  On Wednesday 9th October, the School Council along with Mrs Egan interviewed pupils in Year 3, 5 and 6 for the role of a position within the Playground Peace Police. The children last year worked with their classes to develop this new role which is performed by children at play times to help to keep play times happy and peaceful.  The Council created a job description (see below) and invited candidates for interviews just as would be done for a 'real job'.  Both the School Council and the children being interviewed behaved in a very professional and mature manner and they should be proud of how they conducted themselves.  The Council had a tough decision choosing which children they would recommend for the teachers to approve for the roles but we think we have a very good group of children ready to take on their role after half term.  Well done to everyone involved!  Pictures of the Playground Peace Police will be up on the website soon!

  Playground Peace Police Job Description

  We need 4 Playground Peace Police for ‘infant play’ and 4 Playground Peace Police for ‘junior play’.  Both teams will share the responsibility of lunch break for their appropriate year groups.

  If you are in Years 3, 5 or 6 and are interested in becoming one of our Playground Peace Police, here are the things that the children at Northern Primary would like you to help them with;

  • Oversee games to make sure they are being played fairly and not being spoiled by others
  • Help to sort out small arguments
  • Look out for accidents and ‘be the first on the scene’
  • Monitor the football and basketball areas to ensure fair play
  • Keep an eye out for sad/upset children or children who are alone and try to help them if they need it
  • Watch out for mean words and bullying
  • Look out for emotional outbursts and report to the adults on duty as soon as possible
  • Help the adults on duty by reporting anything that you cannot sort out quickly and easily.

  We also believe that the Playground Peace Police should make sure that they;

  • Do not take sides
  • Do not just focus their attention on their own friends or year group
  • Do not tell children off, they are there to listen and talk and try to find compromises to help keep playtimes peaceful.

• Rossendale Hospice Hero for the Day

  Today at Northern, we were joined by some very familiar superheroes in order to raise awareness of our fantastic local charity Rossendale Hospice. The children are in the process of filling their Penny Pinching boxes in order to donate money to a worthwhile cause. Well done to all our little superheroes!

  

• Last Choir Singing Visit

  Today the Key Stage 2 children enjoyed the opportunity to listen to the singing of Duncan Heather,  an internationally acclaimed tenor. Duncan also engaged the children in singing rounds and then answered the children's questions. It was fantastic for the children to enjoy such an inspirational opportunity. Hopefully it has enthused some more of the children to join Mrs Egan's choir after half term.

  

• Year 2's Fire Safety Talk

  Today our Year 2 children were visited by some very important firefighters. They came in to speak to the children about what to do if a fire broke out and how to keep safe. The children played different roles such as the fire engine, the firefighter, the person answering the 999 call and they all learnt so many things to tell their parents about keeping safe. The children were fantastic and really enjoyed the session. Maybe we have inspired our children to become part of this incredible emergency service.

• Macmillan Coffee Afternoon

  Today our Year 6 children hosted a coffee afternoon in order to raise funds for Macmillan. The children made buns, sold raffle tickets, encouraged parents to play the Pin the Cherry on the Cake game and also spend time with their families. A fantastic time was had by all and we raised a grand total of £200. Massive thanks to those parents who attended and those that contributed buns, cakes and biscuits. It would not have been the success it was without your efforts!

  

• We Are Reading Workshops

  Today the children in Years 4 and 5 took part in a We Are Reading Workshop organised by Lancashire County Libraries. The children looked at the engaging world of books and how to make the stories come alive. This links heavily to our school ethos of promoting the love of reading and encouraging the children to lose themselves in literature. Our visitor was very impressed with all the children's behaviour and participation in the sessions. Well done!

• European Languages Day

  Today at Northern, the children were learning all about languages in other countries. It was lovely to hear the children trying very hard to master and understand a completely new language! Some children learnt songs and dances and some also did some food tasting. Reception learnt some Italian, Year 1 learnt some France, Year 2 learnt some Portuguese, Year 3 learnt some Spanish, Year 4 learnt some Russian, Year 5 learnt some Greek and Year 6 learnt some German. Well done to all the children for trying their best!

• Mad Science Assembly

  Today at Northern, our children were wowed and amazed by the scientist from Mad Science! He told them all about electricity and the children formed their own electrical circuit in order to light the ball. We then used flour, oxygen and a lighter to create small balls of flame which filled the hall with "Wow" and "Oh my's". If your child is interested in the after school club run by Mad Science, letters will be going home today.
